Counterterrorism expert Juval Aviv: Possible Attack on the U.S. Within Ninety Days

"I predict, based primarily on information that is floating in Europe and the Middle East, that an event is imminent and around the corner here in the United States. It could happen as soon as tomorrow, or it could happen in the next few months. Ninety days at the most," said Mr. Aviv.

"What they're going to do," he explained, "is hit six, seven or eight cities simultaneously to show sophistication and really hit the public. This time, which is the message of the day, it will not only be big cities. They're going to try to hit rural America. They want to send a message to rural America: "You're not protected. If you figured out that if you just move out of New York and move to Montana or to Pittsburgh, you're not immune. We're going [to] get you wherever we can and it's easier there than in New York."

::looks incredulous:: Why, is Israel planning to do something so stupid the Arab world rises up and destroys them and tries to destroy us? Come on, Al Qaida/Qaeda/whatsit might not even exist. I mean, spell check doesn't recognize any of the spellings of it.

What is Israel planning to do? I suppose it's possible that Al Qaeda might not exist, although I wouldn't base that on what spell checker thinks. But someone hit us on 9-11 and it could very well happen again. When you have an Israeli Intelligence officer, Michael Chertoff, Rick Santorum and various others all claiming an attack is imminent, it's either a heavy dose of fear mongering or something is going on.

I for one will say that my fear has successfully been mongered.

What is Israel planning to do?

I didn't say they were planning anything. I'm just saying with his credentials he would know a lot of insider stuff. I was just asking.

Hmmm, all the links to the BBC program about Al Qaeda seem to be broken. Not necessarily a conspiracy, the BBC could have just gotten tough about folks uploading their copyrighted stuff. But here's a bit of stuff about it. Oh, wait, here's a link to a segment of the BBC documentary.

When you have an Israeli Intelligence officer, Michael Chertoff, Rick Santorum and various others all claiming an attack is imminent, it's either a heavy dose of fear mongering or something is going on.

I'd vote fear mongering. For the Israeli Intelligent Officer, I see a motive to stir up the American public to support whatever racist violence the Israeli govt is planning to perpetrate. (I vote we dissolve Israel, though, so I might be prejudiced a bit.) Michael Chertoff is a JUDGE who presides over one of the most useless, bloated and dishonest organizations it has ever been the misfortune of the US taxpayer to fund. And I doubt Rick "man/dog love" Santorum has any clue about anything except how to bilk his constituents into buying him a very pricey home.

I for one will say that my fear has successfully been mongered.

Dude, you have a better chance of getting hit by lightening while turning in the winning 100 million lottery ticket bought for you by the Pope than you do have being killed by a terrorist attack. Want a REAL issue to use your fear for?

  • 27,000 children will die of hunger today
  • One and one half acres of rainforst is lost every second
  • Around the world at least 1 women in 3 has been beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime.
  • On any given night in America, anywhere from 700,000 to 2 million people are homeless

Now THAT is terrifying.

Well the reason for that is that the only major foreign terrorist attack on the US was 9/11 so obviously there's a low probability based on that sole act as the only defining statistic. But that doesn't mean that a terrorist attack can and will not occur again.

On 9/10 the chances of 9/11 happening were 0% based on the fact that no foreign terrorists had ever launched such a massive scale attack before. But 9/11 did in fact happen despite it being more likely that all those people would win the lottery.

And to clarify I'm not so much scared for my own personal safety as I am for the safety of my fellow Americans. I'm also quite wary of a militaristic police state being put in place following an attack on the scale of what Mr Aviv is predicting.

I also don't want to belittle the issues you raised as they do concern me as well. I suppose I have become preoccupied with the war on terrorism lately as it has many possible terrifying outcomes for America and the world as a whole.

That's not to say the other issues are unimportant but there has been a LOT of talk from a lot of places about 9/12 (meaning the next big attack in the US) and the continuity of government that will follow (most likely amounting to martial law and suspension of most of the constitution according to Gen. Tommy Franks and many others). That is why I'm presently so concerned about it and haven't been seeding articles about our disappearing rainforests.

Oh, you are worried about FOREIGN terrorism. In that case, add "by the Pope while he was having sex with a dozen blonds."

Even if you take into account terrorism the world over, YOUR chances of being hurt in an attack are very small. Even taking into consideration the acts of terrorism being perpetrated by our "own people", your chance of being involved in a terrorist act are infinitesimally small.

On 9/10 the chances of 9/11 happening were 0% based on the fact that no foreign terrorists had ever launched such a massive scale attack before.

Since I'm still not convince FOREIGN terrorists did this. . . it's still zero. If you are afraid that radical elements within the US govt might again facilitate an apparent attack that might be a big showy event that takes out RELATIVELY few people (remember, we lost 3k for which we have exacted hundreds of thousands of lives in revenge), then you can probably drop the part about the Pope.

And to clarify I'm not so much scared for my own personal safety as I am for the safety of my fellow Americans.

I am concerned about the safety of my fellow Earthlings, some of whom live horrific lives of deprivation and suffering. Right now an entire nation of people is suffering and the scars of our invasion of their land will be there for generations . . on their land and in their hearts. Those people are just as real and important to me as any person residing in the geo-political illusion called the United States of America.

I'm also quite wary of a militaristic police state being put in place following an attack on the scale of what Mr Aviv is predicting.

Then you should be afraid that he has inside information about what our govt is planning, not about a non-existent "terrorist" group might be able to accomplish.

That's not to say the other issues are unimportant but there has been a LOT of talk from a lot of places about 9/12 (meaning the next big attack in the US)

Ah, the Y2K of this decade. This is good business for a lot of company that promote "preparedness". But don't worry, the Mormon church is ready to step in and save you. :/

That is why I'm presently so concerned about it and haven't been seeding articles about our disappearing rainforests.

::sigh:: K, you do that . . . the good news is, while folks are obsessing about some imaginary terrorist attack, or a planned attack by our own govt, agri business will be eating away at the rainforest, children will be starving, women will be taking their lives in shame and pain and someday you will all look up realize you wasted years worrying about the wrong things.

I'm concerned about all Earthlings as well. I'm concerned with those around me first only because I see them, I know them and I love them. That doesn't mean I don't care about all the people my country is killing, my country is allowing to be killed and all the people who die unnoticed. I'm concerned about another attack for many reasons, one of which is the attacks that will take place against Iran in the event of such an attack. Directives are already in place to attack Iran no matter who the next attack comes from.

My real concern is that the war on terror is being used and will be used more blatently as a pretext for wars, curtailing of rights and the implementation of a military state in the US, which would be dangerous for the whole world. Yes we need to save the rainforests, yes we need to speak up for the less fortunate in the world, but if the constitution is dissolved and our rights with it, we won't be able to speak up for anyone, including ourselves.

And the fact that many voices are predicting that all this will be occuring soon, most likely August, including Paul Craig Roberts, Pat Bucannan, Michael Chertoff, Rick Santorum, ABC News, Juval Aviv, to me makes it seem more urgent than the rainforests, which still have a good 30 years left.

I'm not going to argue anymore. I hate humans so much today that the main track in my brain is the hope someone does something stupid and we bomb ourselves out of existence. We are a filthy, selfish, debased species and if I believed there were a god, I would be praying S/He obliterated us. ::sob::

Why not just set your emotion aside and realize hate and violence is part of our nature? Give the notion of global peace, superiority or the moral high ground, and just live in you little world of family and friends.

Love and altruism are also a part of human nature, and I think that they could someday outweigh the greed and violence part of humanity. You've got to admit it's getting better, getting better all the time. And also, all you need is love. And we all live in a yellow submarine.

I had never heard of this guy, so I looked him up to make sure hes not just a random crackpot. Hes a pretty popular guest expert on talk shows, having made about 25 appearances on 5 or 6 different networks over the past 2 years. Before that he was supposedly an Israeli counter-terrorism officer. Given this guy's background I'm surprised this didn't get more coverage.

His credentials not withstanding, his background doesn't explain to me why he'd be connected enough to know something was actually eminent. It's not like former operatives still have access to classified information about stuff like this. Unless hes off socializing with the Al'Qaeda I don't see how he would know anything as firm as "within the next 90 days" to any certainty worth worrying about.

It doesn't make sense to me to be afraid of this stuff. The probability of me or someone I love getting hurt by terrorism is lower than the odds of any of us being in a car wreck or getting cancer or heart disease or...well you get the picture.

Hey thanks a lot for that background check. I wouldn't count him out just because he's a former operative. I've heard that George HW Bush still gets daily briefings from the CIA and if you've been in the intelligence community for long enough you know a lot of people and can therefore know anything they know.

As for the low statistical probability of a terrorist attack, I don't really consider that a valid argument as I stated above. Just because its a rarity doesn't mean its really as unlikely as it seems. True there have yet to be any terror attacks since 9/11 but hatred for the US has only grown and with it the possibilty of 9/12.

Wasn't it an Israeli "insider"agent in Iraq that told the CIA that they had WMD's.

I never said there was a low probability of an attack, I just said the impact of such an attack is low in relation to other actual dangers. The week of 9/11/2001 terrorism was not the #1 killer in the US. It was cancer. After that it was heart disease. After that, I'm not sure but it may well have been traffic accidents. In the time between 9/11 and now, those things have continued killing people daily, while terrorism isn't scoring many points. If I'm not afraid to get in my car, I'm not going to be afraid of some random Arab on dialysis in a cave somewhere in Pakistan. Terrorism is inherently spectacular, but its not all that dangerous. Its like fearing a shark attack, you're much more likely to die in the water from less spectacular things like drowning.

I'm not afraid I'm going to get blown up. I'm afraid someone is going to get blown up, and probably many people. Enough to justify a strike on Iran, PATRIOT act III, World War III, martial law or whatever else Cheney has in mind for us after 9/12.

Don't you think more people will die from World War III than its consequences than you'll save by going down that path? Its like amputating your arm to fix a hangnail. With thousands of people dying from preventable causes every day, why would you give up your freedoms just to stop a minute fraction of a percent of those deaths?

Terrorism is a very tiny speck on the list of preventable things that kill people every day. A smaller speck than the US military for that matter. Its not worth ruining our quality of life over.

Yes. And gangs are killing people that flash their high beams. Did he mention Al Qaeda, or did he just say "They." There probably will be more terrorists attacks in the U.S. , and if I say that enough times leading up to when that happens, I can say that I correctly predicted it.

Man, what can I do with this info anyway. I will fight the terrorism of the ever-present and evil "They" by enjoying the company of my friends and trying to treat people ethically and compassionately. You know why? Because I aint going out like that!!!

When I die, I want to die in love with my world and making art, not a wretched, paranoid, fearful, people-hating wimp.

I didn't say anything about his religious or political affiliations. I thought the issue was that a conservative site is using this guy to muster up some fear. I don't know if he is a zionist, but the fact that he "does talk shows" makes me real suspicious about his credentials as a counter-terrorist or an underground source.

A lot of people question his credentials. If you read his wikipedia entry there are israeli intelligence agents who deny his existence within their ranks. But he also wrote a lot of unflattering things about Mossad, so it's either that he is telling the truth, or he is a disgruntled ex-agent or just trying to make money selling books and fear. But some people trust him, Steven Speilburg trusted him enough to base Munich on him.
